Another winter is slowly approaching, and many of us are really looking forward to it, because that is when one of our favourite seasonal activities comes into its own: skiing, of course!
Yet for all the excitement there is also some apprehension, because not all of us spent the summer actively. Many people say that there is no physical activity that can compare with skiing and nothing similar they could do in summer to prepare properly for the next season.
However, there are great alternatives, and one of them is inline skating. This activity has a lot in common with skiing. The body position when inline skating is almost identical to that in skiing, so the same muscle groups are activated. Numerous studies have shown that inline skating in the summer months is excellent preparation for the coming ski season.
As with skiing, inline skating has many benefits:
- it is an excellent aerobic exercise that helps strengthen the cardiovascular system, thereby reducing the potential risk of heart disease and high blood pressure;
- it strengthens the lower body as well as the abdominal and upper-body muscles;
- incredibly dynamic movement is a hallmark of this activity: on skates you can perform a wide range of demanding movements and so improve your coordination and agility;
- the correct body position while skating strengthens the abdominal muscles, improves posture and prevents back pain;
- skating at 16 km/h burns around 360 calories per hour. And don't forget that at the same time you will be burning fat and toning and shaping your body;
- inline skating can also have a positive effect on self-confidence.
Then again, there are certain differences between the two activities that must be taken into account – above all the equipment itself, the surface you ride on, the speeds reached and many other factors. But for skiers, especially beginners, inline skating really is a practical activity that helps them learn and master the basics of skiing and elements of technique more effectively.
One of the increasingly popular new sports is so-called roller skiing, which in itself shows how these two sports are not only functionally similar but also closely connected.
So make the most of the last spell of warm, dry weather, prepare properly for the coming ski season and avoid unnecessary sore muscles. Charge full speed ahead towards new adrenaline-filled triumphs that only skiing can bring!
