When you are just starting to learn a new skill, it is natural to have all kinds of insecurities and fears that lead to mistakes. With winter sports, and skiing in particular, the amount of information we take in during our stay in the mountains can be a lot to digest, which is why beginner mistakes happen.
Here we share a few useful tips that we are sure will, with a little effort, help you overcome some of the obstacles on the way to enjoying this dynamic and exciting sport.
Never hit the slopes without a good breakfast and plenty of fluids
To start with, we'll tell you something our grandmothers often say: the day should always begin with a good breakfast! Joking aside, one of the beginner mistakes in skiing is skipping meals and heading out into sub-zero temperatures, where demanding weather conditions can wear you out for hours. Spending hours on the slopes “in full gear” is fun, but not easy at all. So don't hold back at the table – tuck in. And of course, don't forget water! During activity on the snow the body loses a lot of fluid, so the best prevention is to keep hydrated, and water is unbeatable for that!
Looking at your feet
The second very common mistake is that most beginners, in their first lessons, focus on the skis themselves – they look at their feet instead of ahead of them, at the slope. Of course, at first it feels very unnatural to have your feet strapped to two boards you have to steer, but your focus should always be on what lies ahead.
Holding the poles
Holding the poles correctly, which gives us stability when steering the skis, is also extremely important, and it is something we should definitely learn from the advice of experienced ski instructors.
Leaning back
As we mentioned, fear is natural in a new situation, and it can multiply tenfold in an unexpected one. Beginner skiers who get scared on the slope often reflexively start leaning back, which can be dangerous. That is why it is important to go slowly and not rush, so that you can react properly if something unexpected happens.
Fear
The last mistake we'll mention is related to the previous one and is the most important advice in this article: there is no room for fear! It is important to stay focused and to have the desire, will and discipline to master this skill and any obstacles we may encounter along the way. As with everything, always have a clear goal and never give up!
