Skiing: so what if you're a beginner?
A walk in the snow in the mountains is a pleasant and healthy activity, and so is sitting in a café drinking hot tea and texting on your phone – but you can't really say you've been on a winter holiday if you haven't skied!
If you have never tried this wonderful snow activity, now is the right time to take up this fun and attractive sport.
We know there are all sorts of fears holding you back from heading for the ski slopes, but we have answers to all your questions :)
“But I'm a beginner – I've never been on skis!”
A great excuse to go back to your walk, your tea or your phone (oh yes… we know you won't pick up a book :)). But this excuse falls flat in the face of the fact that you:
- learned to walk after first crawling (your first success!);
- learned to ride a bike, which you also couldn't do at first;
- learned to swim, dive and go underwater…
Think of as many things as you can that you COULDN'T do before and can do now! Remember how little effort it took to enjoy activities that may even have seemed a bit scary at first. The conclusion is obvious: a little effort and hard work, and there's another great skill you can master!
Why skiing?
Simple maths says: take winter and a beautiful mountain under a fine blanket of snow, where you breathe clean, fresh air, add physical activity with plenty of adrenaline and dynamics, and you get the perfect combination – one of the most fun winter sports: skiing.
As we said in our previous blog post, skiing is an exceptional sport that involves not only the physical but also the mental, social and emotional aspects of who we are, and there is no age or gender limit for it at all – unless, of course, your doctor advises otherwise.
OK… you've convinced me… but HOW do I start?
The safest way to start your winter adventure is to find a good ski school and a reliable instructor who will answer all your questions and doubts, show you the right way to start your ski lessons and, perhaps even more importantly, help you fall in love with the sport.
As we have already said, don't be discouraged if you want to learn to ski later in life. The only barrier you might face is the one you build in your own head. Skiing is healthy and fun, and there is no reason to deny yourself the pleasure it can give you.
Bonus tip
Don't be afraid – simply accept that falling is part of learning! Of course, every instructor will teach you how to get back up and to see falls as something perfectly normal in skiing.
As in any sport, the beginnings bring all kinds of situations that can sometimes be unpleasant because of potential injuries. So don't be stubborn or, even worse, defeatist – just as in life, accept everything that happens as part of learning. If you fall, get up, try again and again, and – most importantly – have a good laugh and lots of fun! It will all be worth it the first time you ski down a slope. Good luck!
